Brevard Philharmonic Announces 2017-18 Season

With 54 applicants of the highest caliber from orchestras all over the world whittled down to four, Brevard Philharmonic is ready to announce its most exciting season to date. Artistic Director Search Season will open with the first concert and the first conductor candidate on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 3 p.m. at the Porter Center at Brevard College.

Each program has been designed to showcase the gifts of each conductor candidate, while at the same time giving the audience a dynamic, varied, delightful music experience.

“What the search committee has been through so far is nothing compared to the decision we are going to have to sit down and make in April,” said Jan Hart, Philharmonic board member and chair of the Search Committee. “The really challenging work begins now. All four candidates are so strong.”

To get to this point, the committee has been in high gear since February. Behind the scenes, they tackled writing the job profile, posting the profile for maximum exposure, and filtering through 54 cover letters, resumes, video links and sample programs.

When they had nine candidates still standing, it was time for the question, “Here are the terms. Are you still interested?”

“The most energizing and positive thing I got out of the search experience was the awareness of how many people want to be a part of this orchestra organization,” said Hart. “They all said ‘yes’.” The committee, made up of board members, musicians and community members/season ticket holders, moved forward with in depth telephone interviews which brought them to their final four. “In the end, we are looking for a candidate who creates a strong connection with the audience, the musicians and the community,” said Hart.

The final recommendation will be made to the board in April after all conductor candidates have each directed a concert, using their choice of music, as part of the Brevard Philharmonic’s season.

Artistic Director Search Season single tickets will go on sale Sept. 1. In addition to having the opportunity to experience concerts directed by four superb conductors, the Philharmonic will continue its reputation for booking stellar guest artists who offer memorable performances all season long.
